“So God created human beings, making them to be like himself.” Genesis 1:27 (GNT)
Several years ago I had the opportunity to be in the British Museum in London. It was a great experience as I wandered through this incredible collection of artifacts, many of them thousands of years old. Some created with precious metals and others crafted with ordinary materials. You wander from room to room and each gallery reveals another masterpiece. For some objects, there is no way that you can even begin to measure what they are worth and they are often described as priceless.
When was the last time you thought of yourself as priceless and of infinite value? Often we get so immersed in the grind of life that we fail to realize our status in God’s eyes. We see our problems and miss out on our providence as humans. A masterpiece is not to be taken lightly; rather it is treasured for what it is. When our kids were younger they would bring home creations from school. They were so proud of them and we would put them in a safe place; some still hang on our tree at Christmas. They are valuable because of who created them!
You and I are valuable because we were created in the image of God. Every human on earth is a masterpiece in God’s eyes. Sometimes we confuse that by identifying with what we do, whom we know or what we have. Unfortunately, those things are subject to constant changes and the whims of the day. When they fail we are left searching for what can provide safety and security in a changing world. From the very beginning, the thing that never changes is our identity as God’s masterpieces!
Rest today in your God-given identity!
